With Jacqueline de Jong: Vicious Circles, NSU Artwork Museum in Fort Lauderdale presents the primary solo present within the US dedicated to the avant-garde Dutch artist who died in June on the age of 85. That includes work, sculptures, works on paper and magazines from De Jong’s over-six-decade profession, the present explores her curiosity in struggle, protest, humour and eroticism, in addition to her involvement with European avant-garde actions, together with the Situationist Worldwide and Cobra.

“The choice to have the exhibition was self-evident,” says Ariella Wolens, the exhibition’s curator. “Jacqueline de Jong’s artwork and life are intrinsically linked to our museum and its mission. We maintain the most important assortment of artwork outdoors Europe associated to Cobra.” The post-war avant-garde artwork motion (1948-51) had nice affect on De Jong’s profession. In keeping with Wolens, though De Jong resisted categorising herself as a member of Cobra, her work displays its rules: “spontaneity, play, borderless collaboration, cross-disciplinary observe, the important thing symbolism of the human-animal, a complete embrace of color and whole political and artistic freedom”, Wolens says. “This ethos runs all through Jacqueline’s work and was important to her early formation as an artist. She is crucial to understanding the afterlife of the motion.”

Abstraction to figuration

The exhibition consists of De Jong’s early summary explorations of color seen in Doomsnight (Doomsday) of 1962 all the way in which to extra figurative, harrowing scenes of the struggle in Ukraine in Mariupol (2022). De Jong typically featured present occasions just like the house race, a second within the Chilly Struggle characterised by each the surprise of outer house and worry of nuclear devastation. The exhibition’s title attracts inspiration from one such work, Cosmonautical Vicious Circle (The Most Confused Souls Discover Themselves One Morning Conditioned by a Little Gravity) of 1966, a part of a sequence exploring the tensions of the time known as Personal Lives of Cosmonauts.

For a number of years, De Jong was romantically concerned with the Danish painter Asger Jorn, a frontrunner of Cobra and co-founder of the Situationist Worldwide. She grew to become a part of the latter group, however was expelled after a disagreement with the founding member Man Debord, main De Jong to create The Situationist Occasions, a pioneering experimental publication that featured collaborations between artists, writers and poets. Vicious Circles options a number of examples of the journal, together with some from the museum’s assortment.

Though she labored prolifically from the Nineteen Sixties, De Jong has solely seen broad recognition lately—after Yale College’s Beinecke Uncommon E book and Manuscript Library acquired the artist’s papers in 2012.

A later revival of curiosity

“Jacqueline’s reckoning in Europe solely occurred over the past ten years, and she or he fought for that; she was at all times her strongest advocate,” Wolens says. Included within the revival of curiosity in De Jong’s work was a 2019 solo present on the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. “Jacqueline stated there have been many galleries that confirmed artists whose work was wholly consistent with hers, however they didn’t have a look at the work of ladies and wouldn’t think about exhibiting them,” Wolens says. “We’re lucky that our museum’s wealthy and deeply eclectic assortment provides us a motive and duty to do one thing about this historic oversight.”

Whereas De Jong died earlier than having the possibility to see her first US solo present, she labored carefully with the museum for practically 4 years planning the exhibition. “Jacqueline is a part of this epidemic of ladies artists who’ve needed to wait till they’re on the finish of their lives to be critically recognised,” Wolens says. “The world remains to be within the means of enjoying catch-up and dealing to acknowledge the cultural contributions of people who’ve been traditionally marginalised.”
