Climate activist found guilty of ‘defacing’ Degas sculpture at US National Gallery of Art – The Art Newspaper

A local weather activist who smeared purple and black paint on the pedestal and enclosure of an Edgar Degas ballerina sculpture in 2023 was discovered responsible on Tuesday (8 April) of “conspiracy to commit an offense towards the USA” by a federal jury. Timothy Martin of Raleigh, North Carolina, and one other affiliate of the environmentalist group Declare Emergency focused the sculpture La Petite Danseuse de quatorze ans (Little Dancer Aged Fourteen, 1880), a fixture on the Nationwide Gallery of Artwork in Washington, DC.

In response to the Division of Justice, Martin and his confederate, Johanna Smith, brought on $4,000 in harm with their protest, and brought on the closure of the gallery containing the Degas sculpture for ten days whereas repairs had been carried out. Smith had beforehand pleaded responsible to “inflicting harm” to the exhibit and was subsequently sentenced to 60 days in jail, 24 months of supervised launch and order to pay over $7,000 in restitution and fines.

The pair’s actions didn’t immediately harm the Degas sculpture. Martin Jr stated in an announcement. “Free speech is a constitutional proper. Martin’s sentencing has been set for 22 August.
