Microsoft has unveiled Venture Solara, a brand new working system and {hardware} platform designed to run AI brokers on small, low-power units – together with a wearable entry badge aimed toward workplace employees that may see, hear, and act on behalf of the person.

The bulletins got here at Microsoft Construct 2026, the place CEO Satya Nadella and senior executives outlined a broader shift in firm technique – away from conventional software program navigation and towards AI brokers that perform advanced duties autonomously.

What Is Venture Solara?

Venture Solara is a brand new platform constructed from the bottom as much as energy AI agent-driven experiences on compact {hardware}.

In contrast to Microsoft’s present software program portfolio, it runs on Android – particularly Microsoft’s personal Gadget Ecosystem Platform – moderately than Home windows.

The selection was deliberate: Android permits the units to run on lower-power {hardware} whereas retaining the safety and administration capabilities enterprise IT groups anticipate.

Microsoft Fellow Steven Bathiche described the platform as “extremely versatile,” designed to assist a variety of gadget kind components that {hardware} producers can construct round.

The Two Idea Gadgets

Microsoft demonstrated two prototype units working Solara at Construct.

The primary is a desk unit – roughly the dimensions and form of an Amazon Echo Present – that unlocks through facial recognition and provides employees fast, voice and touch-activated entry to their AI brokers.

The second, and extra putting, is a wearable entry badge. Designed to hold across the neck on a lanyard or clip to a belt loop, the badge is roughly the dimensions of a typical ID card and packs a small digital camera, a touchscreen, and a fingerprint scanner. A single press wakes an AI agent.

In a single demonstration, Bathiche used his fingerprint to unlock the badge, then directed its digital camera towards the viewers and requested the agent to seize and ahead photographs of the group – a job it accomplished in moments.

The digital camera functionality, Microsoft mentioned, permits brokers to understand and reply to a person’s bodily environment.”

Nadella was additionally proven carrying the badge on a lanyard in the course of the keynote – a visible nod to the workplace entry playing cards the gadget is clearly modelled on.

Each units are powered by chips from Qualcomm and MediaTek. Microsoft mentioned it’s at the moment testing the {hardware} with just a few hundred of its personal workers.

Reference Designs, Not Retail Merchandise

Microsoft was clear that neither gadget is headed to market straight. As a substitute, each are reference designs – blueprints the corporate hopes third-party {hardware} producers will use to construct actual merchandise.

Early enterprise and retail pilots are already underway with CVS Healthcare, Greatest Purchase, Goal, and AccuWeather, which Microsoft says will assist inform how these kind components develop in observe.

“That’s what we’re making an attempt to get executed with Venture Solara, so that you just, as builders and enterprises, have the flexibleness to think about the shape components that you really want and have your brokers be ubiquitous,” Nadella mentioned.

The Broader Context: A Crowded Race

The wearable and ambient AI gadget house is shifting quick.

Meta’s AI-enabled sensible glasses are already in the marketplace, although their digital camera capabilities have drawn scrutiny over privateness. Google is making a renewed push into sensible glasses greater than a decade after the Google Glass failure. OpenAI is creating AI {hardware} in partnership with designer Jony Ive.

For Microsoft, Venture Solara additionally represents a cautious re-entry into {hardware} after the expensive collapse of HoloLens.

The mixed-reality headset, as soon as earmarked for a multi-billion greenback US Military contract, was discontinued in 2024 following almost a decade of growth. This time, the corporate seems to be constructing the platform and letting OEM companions take up the manufacturing threat.

Construct 2026 additionally featured different important bulletins, together with the Floor RTX Spark Dev Field – an Nvidia-powered desktop able to working 120-billion parameter AI fashions domestically – a brand new Copilot agent known as Scout, and MAI Considering-1, Microsoft’s first in-house reasoning mannequin.

However it was Venture Solara, and the badge specifically, that represented essentially the most tangible sign of the place Microsoft believes the subsequent wave of office computing is headed: off the desk, onto the physique, and at all times linked to an agent.
